The basset clarinet is slightly longer and so capable of attaining deeper notes than the standard issue clarinet. Not so deep as the bass clarinet, but very resonant and noticeably lower - a better choice for Mozart's concerto (his last in that form). The instrument we'll hear was reconstructed especially for Michael Collins, who is a virtuoso clarinetist. Next time I host this show I plan to air Collins' amazing realization of Beethoven's violin concerto - transcribed for clarinet! A successful experiment, which, he says, he initially found frightening. After all, with the violin there's no need to provide any breaks for the taking of breaths.
